Borges led me to Adolfo Bioy Casares' The Invention of Morel. Whether he is, though, is up to the determination of the reader. One gets the feeling that one is not actually sure of what is being read. This novella, called The Invention Of Morel has a dream like quality about it. The Invention of Morel starts off as diary entries of a man marooned on an island, and as the plot unfolds you find that he is not alone. Borges writes that to classify this novella “as perfect is neither an imprecision nor a hyperbole” while Octavio Paz describes it as a “perfect novel”. Either Bioy Casares deliberately wrote most of The Invention of Morel in a disconcerting, imprecise style, or Simms didn't do a great job translating. The novella is quite difficult to read. An interesting and quick read, “The Invention of Morel” is written as the stream of consciousness of a man who appears to be mad. It helped that this “novel of ideas” clocked in at 103 pages – you don't want your dense reading to drag on too long.
